These are named after Derry-born Colonel Torrens, Chairman of the South Australian Colonisation Commission. He never visited South Australia, but did buy land here. Torrensville is named after Robert Richard Torrens who arrived on the Brightman in 1839 as Collector of Customs. He was treasurer in 1852 and premier for a short while in 1857. He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Society. R R Torrens is most famous for the ‘Real Property Act’ later known as Torrens Title. He was born and schooled in Cork, and then graduated from Trinity College with a Bachelor of Arts.
