Marybank Farm

Marybank Farm

Near Magill and Morialta, the Marybank house was bought by the Fox family in 1852 and is still in the family. Arthur Fox trained as an apothecary in Dublin and arrived in Adelaide in 1845 where he set up in business at 7 Rundle Street. In 1846 he married Frances Nihill daughter of Daniel and Dymphna from Rockville, County Limerick. Their other daughter, Mary, married Daniel Cudmore. Arthur Fox became wealthy through property in a very short time, but died very young: in 1853 at the age of 33 he drowned in the River Torrens. His widow extended the Marybank house and bought surrounding land. Some other property in the city she rented to Thomas Elder and Robert Barr Smith. At one time Marybank was used to hold Catholic Mass services.
